2024 show season
**updated whenever i watch a new show!
April 7, 2024 - Miss Saigon (GMG Productions)
My god was this a religious experience.
I really don't mean this in a disrespectful manner. I truly think that Miss Saigon is the creme de la creme of every single musical I've ever been to -- and it's the first one I watched this year. It's going to be extreeeemely hard to beat.
I went into Miss Saigon completely blind, save for a few songs like Sun and Moon, I'd Give My Life For You, and Movie In My Mind and I really didn't think there would be any more stand out songs since...well, it's such an old musical. The songs were bound to be dated, right?
WRONG! They were absolutely FIIIIRE. Off the bat, my new favorites are probably Maybe and I Still Believe. Maybe is my new anthem. Ellen is so me (except I wouldn't have wanted to be with Chris after learning about Kim...girl you can have him.)
Abigail Adriano was really so incredible. She had such a pure and clean tone. She is now who I will think of when I hear the word ingenue. Her Kim was just so ethereal -- every time she sang I kept thinking of a dove flying through the air.
Also, how come no one told me there was a childhood engagement to enemies with one-sided pining trope?! That seriously caught me off guard.
I honestly don't know to feel about Chris...? I do feel sorry for him. He tried his best to find Kim, through the war and everything. And then he married Ellen without truly getting over losing her. And he never told Ellen the real nature of their relationship...sigh.
It really was a lose-lose situation if you look at it from every side. I feel bad for everyone...
What really gets me is that the musical ends right after Kim dies. There isn't an aftermath. We don't know what happens after. We can only assume that Chris and Ellen take Tam to America and that's it. What happens to the Engineer? Does he get to go to America too?
Speaking of the Engineer, Seann Miley Moore was OUTSTANDING. Like, actually had the most electrifying energy I've ever seen. He was the single bright spot in the doom and gloom of Miss Saigon's second act lol. That America number was sooo over the top and I loved it.
Can we also have a moment to talk about the set?! A whole entire helicopter that flies, a convertible, statues, and more...I can't even begin to think how much it cost. The cast was seriously perfect too. The entire cast had such beautiful voices and were just amazing in their own rights.
Everyone needs to get a ticket to Miss Saigon now. You'll regret it for the rest of your life if you don't.
